Addressing health mandates is a trying assignment to say the least. Our community includes an
animated representation of the entire range of the opinion spectrum, and maintaining a fair, firm,
and informative adherence to each detail of the repeatedly updated guidelines opened staff up to
emotional response from members of the public that held strong disagreement with each other
and with one aspect or another of the guidelines.
Maintaining workable staffing levels was another big challenge. Hiring campaigns did not retrieve
the level of response needed to build our workforce desirable sizes.
Laying off all sports staff; recreation clerk, sports specialist, and all sports monitors from April
2020 — July 2021.
Following the ever-changing Ventura Co. Health Dept rules as we try to move forward in picnic &
fields rentals, along with getting our leagues & classes back on track this entire year.
Trying to stage the Teen Summer Musical production with the ever changing/challenging
guidelines for the actors as well as theater goers.
Having to endure Jim's dads jokes.... j/k they are funny!
0 Navigating AB5 and figuring out how it applies to us.
Not being able to see our staff face to face and gather in person for meetings. It was almost
impossible not to feel disconnected from them at times because of this. Additionally, not seeing
their smiling faces behind their masks when meeting indoors has been a bummer.
Keeping up with the public health changes and having to cancel programs due to the changes.
One that stands out is with the adult basketball leagues. Knowing that whatever change we would
implement with masks would be greeted by support and outrage from the public. Many times, we
have been in a "no win" situation.
COVID fatigue. I think it has worn on everyone's mental well-being. Small successes, like the
ones mentioned below helped keep us all moving forward!
0 ZOOM community/neighborhood project meetings — glad to be back in person!
0 Processing CCSW & TEEN/GACC for building permits — we got there!
Closing Dog Park ... but it wasn't too bad! Great project results with an understanding
community during closure.
0 Keeping up with the constant changes in mask mandates and enforcing them with the public.
Staff shortage! Getting new Recreation Leaders has been difficult. At one point we had 6 centers
looking for people, but only three candidates accepted an interview out of just five that applied.
Job market is tough right now for everyone.
Navigating the AB5 law that changed everything for our contract instructors.
