Rochelle Callis
CRPD Therapeutic Recreation Program Final Report and Recommendations
September 8, 2017 page 14
1. Address accessibility of sites and facilities, as well as inclusion supports
2. Continue with trained staff and acquire more staff
3. Study and implement ways to get new families involved without displacing current families
4. Develop more programs for children
5. Expand staff and offer more programs
6. Conduct a social skills development program
7. Provide sport opportunities for young athletes afterschool
8. Provide more programs for adults during the week and during the day
9. Provide a cooking class during the day for adults
10. Provide cooking and other programs that last an entire season
In addition, attendees noted that not every municipal or district neighbor of CRPD offers a Therapeutic
Recreation Program. District staff advise and mentor those in other communities often. That was
clear to us in our work, and it was evident in the community feedback meetings.
REVIEW OF SELECTED LOCAL DEMOGRAPHIC DATA REGARDING PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
In this section of the report, we review some of the demographic and census data regarding people
with disabilities within the District. We have principally used data regarding the City of Thousand Oaks.
This is an imperfect data set because the District includes other areas or communities.
However, this suffices for the identification of approximate percentages of people with disabilities,
changes in the incidence of disability between 2000 and 2010 or later, and projections of disability in
the coming years. We do remind the reader that census counts are not perfect, and typically include a
margin of error. We are not applying that factor in our analysis below.
The 2000 Census
In 2000, the Census shows the Thousand Oaks population at 108,785. An approximate distribution by
age and disability status is below. Figures for children aged less than 5 years old were not available.
The census process in 2000 was relatively simple, compared to later years.
THE W -T GRO
DBA RECREATION ACCESSIBILITY CONSiILT .0
ONE SOURCE. INFINITE SOLUTIONS.
