GENERAL MANAGER
Jim Friedl
DATE: September 3, 2015
TO: Board of Directors
FROM: Jim Friedl, General Mana
SUBJECT: Creation of Ad Hoc Co o Discuss
Park and Potential Capital Improvements
RECOMMENDATION
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Ed Jones, Chair
Chuck Huffer, Vice Chair
George Lange, Director
Susan L. Holt, Director
Joe Gibson, Director
GENERAL MANAGER EMERITUS
Tex Ward
Community Events at Conejo Creek
Select two members of the Board of Directors to Discuss Community Events at Conejo Creek
Park and Potential Capital Improvements.
DISCUSSION
Conejo Creek South Park is the District largest tiela sports facility with a significant financial
investment from the District as well as AYSO Region 9. Since the beginning of June 2015,
staff has had multiple meetings regarding this park with the largest user groups (AYSO Region
9, Conejo Valley United Soccer Club, Amateur Baseball Development Group, Relay for Life,
Conejo Valley Unified School District, Library, Chili Cook Off, Conejo Valley Days, and
Oakheart Country Music Festival), in a group setting as well as in individual meetings.
The purpose of the meetings was to look at the 2016 calendar for scheduling purposes and
discuss the impact these large community events are having on the quality of the sports fields.
The weight of large vehicles and carnival rides have caused multiple irrigation (mainline and
sprinkler) breaks, soil compaction, divots, ruts and spotty oil drips. Plus, the time necessary to
dry out the ground in preparation for the heavy trucks/rides combined with time required after
the event to repair irrigation stresses the turf due to lack of water. Another factor to consider
is the limited (if any) parking in the dirt lot off Janss Road when construction begins on the new
school. In light of all this, community event user groups were asked to consider possible
alternatives to the status quo (i.e. seek another venue Or modify the event layout and
operations in order to minimize the impact to the sports fields).
As a result of these discussions, staff believes the Chili Cook -Off can be successfully held at
Conejo Creek North Park (see following agenda item). The Oakheart Country Music Festival
can modify its layout at Conejo Creek South so that large trucks and vehicles are off the sports
403 West Hillcrest Drive I Thousand Oaks, CA 91360-4223
(805) 495-6471 FAX: (805) 497-3199 Email: parks@crpd.org
