QH 11@
GENERAL MANAGER
Jim Friedl
Date: May 21, 2015
To: Board of Directors
From: Jim Friedl, General Manager
Subject: Goebel Adult Community Center Cafe - Operations Update
RECOMMENDATION
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Ed Jones, Chair
Chuck Huffer, Vice Chair
George Lange, Director
Susan L. holt, Director
Joe Gibson, Director
GENERAL MANAGER EMERITUS
Tex Ward
This report provides a status of the Goebel Adult Community Center Cafe operations and
requires no action from the Board.
DISCUSSION
Background
On February 19, 2015, staff came before the Board to seek approval to terminate the contract
with the County regarding the Senior Nutrition Grant.
Staff had researched and sought to create a restaurant/cafe operated by a private vendor at
the adult center to better serve the needs of the seniors. The cafe concept would eventually
expand to offer a breakfast menu and a lunch offering. A voucher system was to be developed
to meet the needs of the low income seniors in our community.
Staff was not aware of any programs that combined the Nutrition Program administered by
Ventura County and a cafe with a private operator. When staff contacted the County about
terminating the contract prior to the Board meeting, the County confirmed the 120 -day required
notice to terminate the contract. Although the County was disappointed about terminating the
contract, the County thought the concept of the cafe was innovative and understood why the
District would want to expand services.
New Agreement with County
After hearing the Board's concerns during the February 19, 2015 meeting, staff set up another
meeting with the County. In the meantime, staff at the County found a program in Des Plaines,
403 West Hillcrest Drive I Thousand Oaks, CA 91360-4223
(805) 495-6471 FAX: (805) 497-3199 Email: parks@crpd.org
