Illinois, the Cumberland Cafe, which combines a cafe with a senior nutrition program. CRPD
and County staff researched the concept and how the two programs co -existed.
Multiple meetings concluded that beginning June 30, 2015, Conejo Recreation & Park District
and the County of Ventura will terminate their contract agreement. CRPD will then enter into a
vendor agreement with the County and the County will reimburse the District for every senior
nutrition meal served to a senior at the cafe. If the District enters into an agreement with an
outside Concessionaire, the District would then reimburse the outside Concessionaire.
Potential Agreement with Concessionaire
Staff is continuing to discuss a potential agreement with an outside concessionaire, Chef It Up!
LLC, including capital improvements, the expanded menu, and expanded hours of operation to
potentially include breakfast.
As part of the agreement, the concessionaire would serve one senior nutrition meal Monday
through Friday during the hour of 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. This senior meal will be approved by
the registered dietician for the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging. The senior nutrition
meal of the day will be the only menu item that will qualify for the reimbursement from the
County. The senior meal requirements will remain the same: Seniors must be 60 or older, the
meal will be free to the seniors and donations will be accepted. Any donations collected will be
used to pay for additional reimbursement if the program exceeds budgeted 10,000 meals per
year.
Chef It Up! has agreed to the senior meal concept and will work with the District and County to
implement the program.
Upon conclusion of discussions with Chef It Up!, it is staffs intent to return to the Board with a
recommended mutually -beneficial agreement.
Temporary Senior Nutrition Program
So there is no interruption in food service, in coordination and conjunction with the County, a
plan is being developed to serve meals to the seniors during the approximate two-month
renovation period while the dining room and kitchen are being remodeled. Several local
restaurants are approved by the County and can provide approved meals to be served by the
District.
Goebel Senior Commission
The change was approved by the Senior Center Commission at their March 25, 2015 meeting
and the Commission pledged $10,000 to the remodel.
CONCLUSION
For over 40 years, some form of a Ventura County senior nutrition program has been
administered and on-site at the District's senior center. Many changes have occurred during
HILLCREST CENTER 403 WEST HILLCREST DRIVE, THOUSAND OAKS, CALIFORNIA 91360-4223
(805) 495-6471 FAX: (805) 497-3199 E-MAIL:parks@crpd.org
