• Fundraising the <br />Lights <br />Click the lights to see a picture of there <br />installed at the park. <br />Poway Dog Park Lighting Fundraising Committee <br />In June 1996, Burkhardt formed the all -volunteer Poway <br />Dog Park Lighting Fundraising Committee. In the two years <br />following, they raised over $14,300 to purchase lights for <br />the park so dogs can use it during the winter evenings when <br />the sun sets early. <br />Fundraising events included: <br />• Participating in two list <br />2nd <br />j Community Days <br />marching in the parade and hosting an information <br />booth to sell dog park merchandise <br />• Organizing and presenting three [!A 2nd. 3rd <br />Poway Dog Days -- carnival -like gatherings with <br />information booths, demonstrations, dog games, fun <br />dog shows, and refreshments <br />• Sponsoring a rattlesnake avoidance clinic -- where <br />dogs and their owners learned life-saving behaviors <br />when encountering rattlesnakes <br />Hosting an information booth at the Poway Street <br />Fair to sell dog.park merchandise <br />• Sponsoring a self-service pet wash -- where owners, <br />volunteers, and committee members washed their <br />own dogs in a wet but cheerful gathering <br />Hosting three summer barbecues at the dog park -- <br />where park visitors enjoyed hot dogs, hamburgers, <br />chili, nachos, and all the trimmings. Poway Dog <br />Park memorabilia items were on sale as well. <br />The City of Poway contributed the balance of the money <br />required to pay for the $16,500 lights and the <br />commemorative plaqj& to be displayed at the dog park. The <br />plaque includes the names of the lighting fundraising <br />committee and the donors who gave $100 or more for°the <br />lights. <br />Throughout the fundraising project, the Community <br />Services Department offered its support to the committee in <br />various ways -- providing meeting rooms for the <br />committee's weekly meetings, providing equipment and <br />advertising for specific events, and fu*mlly by contracting <br />for the installation of the lights. <br />The local media leaded large support to the fundraising <br />efforts by continuing to publish information about the <br />benefits of the dog parr and about upcoming events.
