Conejo Recreation & Park District
GENERAL MANAGER
Jim Friedl
DATE: March 28, 2017
TO: Board of Directors
FROM: Jim Fried[, General Mana
SUBJECT: Recreation Division P o ction
RECOMMENDATON
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
George M. Lange, Chair
Susan L. Holt, Vice Chair
Joe Gibson, Director
Ed Jones, Director
Chuck Huffer, Director
GENERAL MANAGER EMERITUS
Tex Ward
Add and approve job specifications for Cafe Specialist/Manager Position (Regular Part -Time)
DISCUSSION
Background
The Senior Nutrition Program (SNP) has been offered at Goebel Adult Community Center (GACC)
for the past 43 years (25 years at the current location, 1385 Janss Road.) Originally, the program
was administered by Ventura County, then the City of Thousand Oaks, and for the past seven
years by CRPD.
CRPD staff continually evaluate programs and services offered by the District, and make every
effort to be responsive to the public's needs. In 2014, through dialogue with senior patrons, staff
came up with the idea of recreating the food services component at GACC. The vision included
serving more seniors beyond SNP, providing fresh, healthy, affordable and expanded menu items,
increasing the hours of operation, remodeling the under-utilized dining hall to make it more
attractive, and providing more opportunity for socialization. An anticipated outcome was to create
a revenue stream for Conejo Senior Volunteer Program (CSVP).
Prior to taking this plan to the CRPD Board of Directors, staff met with senior leaders from CSVP
Advisory Committee, Goebel Senior Center Commission (GSCC), City of Thousand Oaks Council
on Aging, and city staff to get their feedback which was positive and supporting. Staff also met
with a potential food service provider.
In February, 2015 staff went before the CRPD Board of Directors and proposed the above-
mentioned course of action, and requested permission to terminate the SNP, and move forward
with a new private food service provider. The Board authorized staff to move forward providing
the SNP remained in place.
ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES
403 West Hillcrest Drive • Thousand Oaks, CA 91360-4223
(805) 495-6471 • FAX: (805) 497-3199 • Email: parks@crpd.org - Website: www.crpd.org
