December 1.8, 1997
Page 2
7. DEFERRED MATTERS
A. Provide Input And Direction To Staff To Continue Work On Planning
For A Dog Park At Selected Facilities In Addition To Conejo Creek
Park
Sorensen reviewed the background of the dog park project, including
consideration of Conejo Creek, as well as other locations for a potential site.
He identified primary criteria for site selection, including 'on-site parking,
arterial feeder roads, and no displacement of current uses, and he
compared various undeveloped sites, including portions of Estella Park,
Pepper Tree Playfield, and Conejo Community Park, with the criteria
identified .
In response to Board inquiries, Sorensen said that minimal grading may be
necessary at some prospective sites; the goal is not to put the dog facility
too close to existing homes; approximately one and one-half acres are
needed for the facility; a bio -filtration system will be part of the facility; costs
will be more than at first anticipated because the original estimate was
based on use of an existing site with amenities; there is a commitment of
about $12,000 from an interested, non-profit group; $24,000 has been
budgeted; and staff plans an extensive outreach and public notification
program for whichever site is to be considered.
Lange stated that at the dog park facility he recently visited, a slope was
5 used advantageously. Gillette said that a dog park facility should be
somewhat isolated, yet centrally located within the community. Jacobsen
said he favored a restricted access parcel of land between the park dog
facility and adjacent home sites.
In response to Gillette's inquiry, Washington said that its unlikely that any
proposed dog park site could serve as a venue for dog shows because of
its limited size.
