Minutes 7-11-96
Page 2
Jacobsen declared the public hearing open.
Sorensen noted the relevant funding, maintenance, and
design agreements with the City of Thousand Oaks.
Referencing a map, he identified recent changes in site
design based on public input and concerns. Changes
include, relocation of tot lot, the provision of two
instead of five bar-be-que pits, and the addition of
night lighting at the gateway sign and walkway security
lighting, and a drinking fountain near the tot lot. He
said that Newbury Park Rotary Club has expressed interest
in supporting a sign board similar to the Teen Center
sign, but the proposed sign is currently not part of the
Master Plan. He thanked community volunteers for the
grove of oak trees that was planted and maintained by
volunteers.
In response to Board inquiries, Sorensen explained:
signage will be decided at the July 23 City Council
meeting; a standard irrigation system will be installed
in the turf areas; a drip system currently sustains the
oak tree grove; signage is expected to conform to City
standards; the number of tables will remain the same as
originally envisioned; the cost of sign lighting,
utilities, and maintenance will be shared with the City
on a one-third two-thirds basis; in order to direct
lighting downward, drop box lighting is planned for the
interior of the park; and, if approved July 23 by the
City Council, construction is expected to begin in
October.
Val C. Mogensen, said that he had no complaints with the
site plans, and he urged that the welcome sign reflect
the Newbury Park name.
In response to Holt's inquiry, Sorensen said that
discussions with the City regarding the site name have
been held, no decision has been made, and the name will
be decided by the Board's Park Naming Committee. Ward
clarified that park signage and name is a sensitive
issue, a bilateral decision involving the City Council
and District Board will be made, there has been
discussion to name the site "Newbury Park" with "City of
Thousand Oaks" included on the sign, the "Michael Park"
designation simply reflects its location on Michael
Drive, and all suggestions and recommendations are
welcome.
