March 19, 1998
Page 2
It was moved by Gillette, seconded by Holt, and carried 5-0, to
approve the Consent Calendar as presented.
7, DEFERRED MATTERS
None
8. NEW ITEMS
A. Conceptual Approval Of Conejo Valley Community Garden Club
Project At Conejo Creek West (Waverly Area)
Sorensen referenced the club's proposal and noted that the northwest
quadrant of Conejo Creek is the area requested, whereas staff
recommendation is not site specific. He said that the extensive community
input being solicited for the master planning process begins April 7, and
many potential users are interested in the site. In response to Board
inquiries, Sorensen explained that it is expected that the community
hearings will generate increased public awareness and participation,
everyone is being noticed up to 300 feet around the periphery of the 120 -
acre site, past lists of interested persons are also being utilized for
notification, and he discussed the advantages and disadvantages of several
alternative sites for the garden.
Don Jacobs, president of Conejo Valley Community Garden Club, said that
a letter of intent has been drafted, the club is covered under the umbrella of
ETI's insurance and has the endorsement of several community
organizations, participants will be urged to donate vegetables grown to local
food banks, nothing will be grown for commercial sale, no prohibited
substances will be grown, the size of the proposed garden is open to
discussion, visibility and accessibility to transportation are important factors
in the location decision, club members would like to start as soon as
possible, and to develop a viable garden requires more than one season.
He discussed the range of fees for plots in community gardens, and the
extent of interest in the project.
Dave Anderson discussed the socially redeeming qualities of community
gardens.
Gina Smurthwaite, ETI Corral 37, said that a community garden would be
an excellent passive activity for the site, the group is covered under the ETI
insurance umbrella, and the area requested is the least rocky.
