October 5, 2000 <br />Page 3 <br />It was moved by Lange, seconded by Gibson, and carried 5-0 to <br />authorize the expenditure of $5,200 to expand the hard drive capacity of <br />the District's AS400 computer system. <br />9. ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION <br />A. Direct Staff To Explore Viability Of Concept For Neighborhood For <br />Learning Centers (NfLs) With Children And Families First Commission <br />(CFFC) <br />Gibson noted his position on the Program Evaluation Committee for the <br />Ventura County Children and Families First Commission (CFFC), and <br />discussed the "Neighborhood for Learning" or "NfU' centers, a key program of <br />the CFFC. He said that $500,000 per year has been allocated for the Conejo <br />Valley area, and collaboration among the City, CRPD, School District, and <br />community based organizations is necessary. <br />In response to Board inquiries, Gibson said that this is a Ventura County <br />commission, he was appointed as a volunteer on the Program Evaluation <br />Committee, and Proposition 10 Tobacco Tax money is expected to be a long <br />term source of funding. Ward said that Ventura County has been divided into <br />seven geographic areas, Administrator Benton and Recreation Manager <br />Lindsey have been involved in initial meetings, staff recommends District <br />participation, and an executive summary of the program's strategic plan is <br />available. <br />It was Board consensus to direct staff to explore the viability of the <br />concept of Neighborhood for Learning Centers (NfLs) with the Children <br />and Families First Commission (CFFC), and work with the City of <br />Thousand Oaks, the Conejo Valley Unified School District, and <br />Supervisor Schilo's office to implement the program and proceed with <br />appropriate grant requests. <br />10.
