July 22, 2004 <br />Page 4 <br />Continuing, he said that staff has just completed its annual 100 -feet brush <br />clearance effort; and various agencies, including the National Park Service, <br />are discussing the merits of a range of brush clearance policies. Jacobsen <br />asked for a future overview of the issue. Gibson stated his concern about <br />an unfunded mandate, if changing laws require expanded brush clearance. <br />In response to Lange's inquiry, Berger said that Mountains Recreation and <br />Conservation Authority (MRCA), as a state agency, is exempt from the Los <br />Angeles brush clearance policy. <br />B. Recreation Division Report <br />Benton identified upcoming recreation events including: Sports coaches <br />training, August 2 and 9; Goebel Senior Adult Center seminar "Assisted <br />Living Options and Your Future", August 5; and the Concert in the Park <br />series featuring Greg Adams and Herman's Hermits, August 15 and <br />September 6 respectively. <br />In response to Lange's Inquiry, menton said that the Teen Center's Surf <br />Camp was a very popular first-time program this summer with 30 <br />participants in the second session, and transportation was provided by <br />rented vans driven by staff. <br />Gibson encouraged staff to promote certification and training programs for <br />coaches. Benton said that staff will discuss the issue. <br />C. Management Services Division Report <br />Lewanda presented an update of the state budget situation. <br />D. General Manager's Report <br />No report. <br />E. Directors' Reports <br />Gibson encouraged CSDA Conference attendance. He said that, as a <br />board member, he attended the California Association of Recreation and <br />Park Districts (CARPD) meeting earlier in the day in Sacramento, and the <br />organization supports long term budget reform and protection; the Conejo <br />Coalition for Youth and Families will meet July 28 at Hillcrest Center, at <br />which time the annual action plan will be discussed; and, as a member of <br />
