4. Improve and increase youth opportunities, programs and activities <br />(recreational, entertainment, cultural, social, educational, etc.) to safely <br />and appropriately meet a variety of enrichment and developmental needs <br />of Thousand Oaks youth. <br />A. Explore implementation of programs to teach youth about, and deepen their <br />understanding of, social and cultural issues and resources. <br />B. Encourage development of more recreational facilities for youth and expanded <br />recreational activities and hours of operation. <br />C. Assure that local transportation system is designed to effectively meet current <br />needs of youth and their families who depend on it for school, recreation, work, <br />and other purposes. Explore expanding hours of public transportation services <br />on weekends and during evening hours as feasible. <br />D. Engage area colleges and universities to work with schools and community <br />organizafions to provide assistance and resources to the City's youth. <br />E. Maximize utilization of existing youth activities and services. For example, <br />explore ways to expand Teen Center programs and facilities. <br />F Utilize the Teen Center and explore new satellite "hubs" through which youth can <br />participate in activities and access social services, tutoring academic support, <br />and other resources. <br />G. Work with service providers to meet emotional health needs of Thousand Oaks <br />youth and encourage them to expand counseling and other programs related to <br />suicide prevention, drug/alcohol abuse, family violence, stress management and <br />other identified issues. <br />H. Collaborate with schools, colleges and universities, major municipal institutions, <br />businesses, civic and faith -based groups to prepare youth for employment. <br />1. Increase number of internship and job shadowing opportunities. <br />2. Utilize resources such as Conejo Youth Employment Services to identify <br />potential youth employers. <br />3. Work with community, civic and faith organizations and the business <br />community to develop a Citywide teen volunteer and mentoring program. <br />4.
