designated viewing boxes this summer, I am confident that we can hold concerts under almost
any circumstances.
Staff pulled off another successful summer of camp, while navigating the pandemic. Although we
had a couple of COVID cases, we did not have any major outbreaks that required prolonged
shutdowns.
0 No fires! I feared having to operate evacuation shelters during the pandemic.
0 We hired a new Recreation Specialist who was also the recipient of a part-time service award.
Started programs in the fall with the help of Adelante and Safe Passage for kids and families from
the Los Feliz area. We just did our first field trip to RideOn in Newbury Park on Friday 10/29/21.
Our most popular event, Touch a Truck, took on a new look as a parade this year. It was very
well received by the public.
Cupid Car traveled around Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park and Westlake spreading CUPID CAR
GRAMS for Valentine's Day for loved ones with no contact delivery.
0 We raised over $10,000 for the 4th of July 2021 fireworks with local businesses and families.
• Getting emails like this how the TR Unit/CRPD has helped families during the pandemic (received
permission from the family to use the email):
"First of all, Mary LOVES her routine. She really struggled when things first shut down in March. We
saw increased behaviors, anxiety, and overall depression with Mary because she didn't fully understand
what was happening and she THRIVES on routine. Once she was able to start going to the TR Unit,
things turned around! She loves having a plan for the day, going somewhere to see people and be
social, and have an agenda to write out for the day. She was much happier all around, and less
anxious. She really enjoys her time there, and loves having a stable routine again.
On another note, as a mother of five kids, I truly appreciate being able to send her to the school camp to
get her school work done. I was having a difficult time keeping up with five remote learning schedules,
and Mary was falling behind in her school work, missing some Zoom classes, and not finishing her
homework because I simply could not keep up with all of it. Sending Mary to the TR Unit enabled her to
get more out of her school work and have more supervision with it than I could give her, with all the other
responsibilities I had. She gets the attention she needs, and does her homework at camp so we can
spend time together as a family when she gets home. Thank you for all you do for us!"
The pandemic showed how flexible, professional, and adaptable we are with change. I was not a
supervisor for long before the pandemic hit, and it gave me the opportunity to use the tools I was
given from past and present leadership (especially Cecilia) to provide for the community in such
challenging times. I'm so grateful and thankful.
Return back to programs is not just a return back to normalcy. Everyone carries a light and a
smile when they get to see their friends during programs and to get out of the house. Many
individuals with special needs don't have the opportunity to pick up a phone to call friends or visit
with friends. The parents, too, were impacted. They have been stuck inside with their special
need child without a break. You truly can see the stress and heaviness the pandemic brought to
