Conejo Recreation & Park District
GENERAL MANAGER
Jim Friedl
DATE: December 16, 2021
TO: Board of Directors
FROM: Jim Friedl, General Man
SUBJECT.- YEAR IN REVIEW 2021 i
RECOMMENDATION
Receive and file 2021 Year -in -Review.
BACKGROUND
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Doug Nickles, Chair
Nellie Cusworth, Vice Chair
George M. Lange, Director
Susan L. Holt, Director
Chuck Huffer, Director
GENERAL MANAGER EMERf f US
Tex Ward
Like 2020, the year 2021 will be remembered as another year affected by the COVI D-19 global
pandemic. As vaccination rates rose throughout Spring, there was a sense that life would soon be
returning to "normal." In late Spring/early Summer, virus -related public health department rules limiting
certain activities and gatherings were loosened — and the vast majority of recreation and park activities
resumed. However, as the transmissibility of the virus continues, public health orders continue to require
masks for indoor gatherings in public facilities.
The Conejo Recreation and Park District is in the "gathering" business, and during the gathering shut
downs, CRPD lost significant revenue from rentals, reservations, classes, and programs, and was unable
to employ hundreds of instructors, camp counselors, life guards and recreation leaders.
As the Summer Recreation Program Guide was being published, there were serious concerns that the
public might not readily resume gathering to participate in CRPD classes, programs, shows, facility
rentals, sports, theatrical performances, community events, and sports. Fortunately, the public has
continued to seek CRPD's offerings, and overall participation is nearing pre -pandemic levels. Outdoor
activities are more popular than ever, and indoor classes and programs are enjoying healthy participation
because of, and in spite of, the indoor face -covering rules.
Throughout 2021, the CRPD Board of Directors maintained its meeting schedule and accomplished quite
a bit.
The following bullet point list is a summary of some of the Board's significant actions, projects and
accomplishments for 2021 as part of its constant effort to fulfill the District's mission t© enrr§ch the
q. uality of life for our community by preserving and enhancing recreational opportun§y es, parks
and open space.
• Updated pool -use agreements with the Conejo Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) for
Summer programming in the Thousand Oaks and Newbury High School pools (Late December
2020).
ADPl NO STRATI AVE OFFICES
403 West Hillcrest Drive I Thousand Oaks, CA 91360-4223
(805) 495-6471 1 FAX: (805) 497-31991 Email: parks@crpd.org I Website: www.crpd.org
