Fortunately, with the shift towards private lessons charged at a higher rate than group lessons, the unit is
seeing an increase in revenue despite lower participation compared to 2019.
Most other units were able to finish out the Winter 2020 program session or simply pro-rated participants for any
missed classes at the end of the session. The true impact of the pandemic was not seen until the Spring 2020 program
session, and the effects are still being seen as of Winter 2021.
The special activities units (HCFA, GACC, TEEN, and TR/OMC) have seen higher than average declines in participation
due to the nature of their programs and their respective demographics. The more traditional recreation facilities have
had the opportunity to reintroduce programming utilizing their outdoor areas and larger indoor space in which the
participants can maintain social distancing. The special activities units have had to rely on virtual format programs or
small group classes, which do not draw large enrollment numbers.
Therapeutic Recreation saw a year of growth in 2020, increasing staffing to allow for not only new programs but
higher enrollment capacity for existing programs. The unit also began offering new general population classes. The
pandemic halted this momentum in 2021, unfortunately, and the unit is now working to restore its recent success.
