Recreation Division Report
Callis reported that despite the pools being closed, Aquatics staff is staying in touch with each
other and continue to communicate closely with other professionals in the Southern California
Municipal Athletic Federation (SCMAF) regarding what will be necessary to safely reopen
the pools when the time comes. Options are being discussed with senior staff and the
Human Resources supervisor regarding part-time employees and options regarding sick
leave. In terms of rentals, there has not been a date set to resume allowing reservations;
this issue will be revisited on the first of June when it is likely that the moratorium on rentals
will be extended to July 1st. Callis referenced the Recreation Highlights provided the Board
members this evening, including Preschool and Pre -K distance learning, data regarding
website visits to the virtual recreation center and the corona virus page, and a breakdown on
the number of staff hours worked. The Program Guide recently mailed to residents is much
smaller and contains no specific dates/times/costs. The missing info will be provided as time
and protocols evolve. The plan now is to open summer camps and summer clubs, which are
most similar to childcare and intended for working parents to use (as opposed to recreational
use). Registration is currently scheduled to open for these camps and clubs on June 1st at 9
am; this information will start to be publicized next week. Community centers will be utilized
specifically for programming and will not be open to the public; these programs will be run at
a breakeven cost. Supervisors and their teams are looking at new and creative ways to use
outdoor space. In an effort to keep socially engaged with patrons, Recreation staff are doing
at home "drop-offs", videos of which are available on Facebook.
C. Most of the proposed
changes are related to Recreation; recommendations made will have some degree of
uncertainty as to the future due to the public health situation. It will be unlike a typical second
year budget. The date to present it to the Board has been pushed back about a month to
allow for more clarity. The 2020 CSDA Conference has been cancelled. Friedl attended the
Virtual Special Legislation Days this week. A current COSCA/CRPD issue is the large
number of people visiting Wildwood Regional Park; some patrons are not following the rules
and not observing social distancing. Via social media, there will be an attempt to alert visitors
to various other trails throughout the District.
E. Directors Reports
Huffer has hiked five of the COSCA challenge trails and has found them to be relatively
unpopulated. Cusworth attended a Chumash Museum zoom meeting; they are doing very
well. The museum now has an online store and they have updated their website with an
