and in coordination with Geo Elements' guidance and RRM Design Group's Landscape
Architecture skills, developed a conceptual design for the park (EXHIBIT 4).
The conceptual landscape design strives to balance the existing approved landscape design with
concerns raised regarding the volume of landscape mulch in the existing plan. The proposed
conceptual plan reduces the total quantity of landscape mulch by 0.7 acres — a 29.4% reduction
from the existing plan. As an alternative non-flammable groundcover, staff recommends using
stabilized decomposed granite (DG). In addition to the 29.4% reduction of the total quantity of
landscape mulch, the proposed design increases the buffer of non-flammable ground cover (DG)
between the park and public streets and private yards and homes while adhering to the District's
water conservation practices. The balance between landscape mulch and DG will still provide
sufficient ample moisture retention for trees and shrubs in targeted areas which will help keep the
ground and ambient air temperature cooler during hotter days.
The cost of installed DG as compared to landscape mulch is approximately 16:1 on initial install.
However, landscape mulch must be replenished more frequently than DG so long-term costs may
be comparable.
STRATEGIC PLAT",!
