Rochelle Callis
CRPD Therapeutic Recreation Program Final Report and Recommendations
September S, 2017 page 21
* Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County
* Oxnard Special Populations (DSP)
* Alternative Recreation (Rancho Simi RPD)
* Adaptive and Senior Recreation Services (Eugene)
* Inclusion Services and Adaptive Recreation (Santa Barbara)
A rose, by any other name, would smell as sweet? Shakespeare asks that question in Romeo and Juliet.
We believe though that the name variance distinguishes different types of programs.
The term "therapeutic recreation" is typically preferred by persons who are a CTRS or a RTC. It
properly reflects their education and credential.
The term special recreation grew out of "special education". It was intended to modify the service
(recreation) by noting that it is intended for people with disabilities (special).
Adaptive tends to reflect an emphasis on recreation for people with physical disabilities. It is also
regional—few, if any programs east of Colorado are known as adaptive recreation programs.
Alternative recreation is a descriptor we had not heard before. A Google search listed the Rancho Simi
program as the second find.
The terms "inclusion" and "adaptive" together perhaps reflect an understanding that the mission is
changing. Adaptive was the start, and inclusion is now on the rise.
The term "special populations" is an old one with some new aspects. Originally used in therapeutic
recreation curricula, it included groups such as people with disabilities, the homeless, the incarcerated,
the aged, persons who are transgender or in transition, and other underserved or underrepresented
populations.
Office Location: the offices of three entities are housed in recreation facilities (CRPD, Eugene, and
Santa Barbara), while the remaining four are located at offices within the division or department of the
overall agency. This division is typical and has both advantages and disadvantages. We do address this
in our recommendations.
CATEGORY 2: Staffing and credentials
Credentials of Program Overseer: the credentials possessed varied greatly. This may be a correlation
to philosophy. California is one of only a handful of states (Utah, North Carolina, Massachusetts
THE W -T GRO
DBA RECREATION ACCESSIBILITY CONSULT C
ONE SOURCE. INFINITE SOLUTIONS.
