Rochelle Callis
CRPD Therapeutic Recreation Program Final Report and Recommendations
September 8, 2017 page 17
does so with approximately 288 staff members, and of that number, nearly 180 are Service
Coordinators, the front line of planners and facilitators.
Few TCRC services are recreational in nature. Day programs do include some recreational activities.
TOPSoccer is a facilitated service, as is Challenger Little League.
Readers should bear in mind that persons with developmental disabilities are likely the largest sub -
demographic amongst those with disabilities. Health Research Funding, at its website, notes that 15%
of children aged 3 to 17 have one or more developmental disabilities, and in the general population,
the figure for all age groups may be as high as 2.5%. This term is defined broadly and includes
cognitive or processing health conditions that arise during childhood, but before the age of 21.
As a comment, viewing the "under age 5" category reveals local officials with a better count. This
supports our statement earlier that the census counts in this age group are unreliable and far too low.
To focus on the CRPD service area, we have separated the Ventura County numbers for TCRC in the
table below.
Demographics Conclusions
Census counts are a reasonable approximation of persons in a community in each census category.
However, census counts are unreliable when the count can be influenced by public policy initiatives
and concerns.
THE W -T GRO
DBA RECREATION ACCESSIBILITY CONSULT C
ONE SOURCE.
