Conejo Recreation & Park District
GENERAL MANAGER
Jim Friedl
DATE: November 16, 2017
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
George M. Lange, Chair
Susan L. Holt, Vice Chair
Joe Gibson, Director
E=d Jones, Director
Chuck Huffer, Director
GENERAL MANAGER EMERITUS
Tex Ward
TO: Board of Directors
FROM: Jim Friedl, General Mana
SUBJECT: Council on Aging's Eff Ignate the City of Thousand Oaks as an "Age
Friendly/Liable Community" Through American Association of Retired Persons
(AARP)/World Health Organization (WHO)
RECOMMENDATION
Authorize General Manager to Provide a Letter in Support of Council on Aging's Effort to Designate the
City of Thousand Oaks as an "Age Friendly/l_.ivable Community" Through AARP/WHO.
DISCUSSION
On October 24, 2017, representatives from the City of Thousand Oaks' Council on Aging met with
ConejoRPD staff to discuss their efforts to generate stakeholder support for the City of Thousand Oaks
to seek an "Age Friendly/Livable Community" designation through AARPMHO. Seeking the Age
Friendly/Livable Community is a process where both public and private stakeholders within a City
collaborate to assess and develop an action plan addressing eight domains of livability:
1. Outdoor Spaces
2. Transportation
3. Housing
4. Social Participation
5. Respect and Social Inclusion
6. Civic Participation and Information
7. Communication and Information
8. Community and Health Services
Since ConejoRPD is a public entity stakeholder active in several of the above "domains of livability" the
Council on Aging is seeking ConejoRPD's support as it requests City Council support for the application
process. The plan will encourage the City and stakeholders to consider their priorities and actions
through a lens of livability for all ages. If the City ultimately approves the effort, ConejoRPD staff
anticipates participating in the stakeholder group and providing information and data as part of the
application and assessment process.
STRATEGIC PLAN COMPLIANCE
Meets 2016-2020 Strategic Plan Objective 1.0 Programs:
Provide high quality programs and services that are responsive to the community's needs.
