CRPD is working to complete its
sixth and final planned community park. Originally planned as a traditional community park with
acres of irrigated sports fields, the Lang Ranch Community Park has been re -imagined and re-
named "Sapwi Trails Community Park" after a Chumash village site meaning "House of Deer."
By design, Sapwi Trails will have no irrigated sports turf and will utilize the existing natural terrain
and habitat with minimal irrigation to establish new native trees and shrubs.
The 144 -acre, CRPD-owned property contains approximately one mile of Lang Creek, and sits at
the western -most edge of a significant block of contiguous public parkland and trails in the Simi
Hills. The City of Thousand Oaks and CRPD are collectively contributing $5,000,000 toward park
improvements, leaving a shortfall of $2,000,000 of the estimated project cost of $7,000,000.
By adding visitor -serving amenities like parking, restrooms, and signage directing pedestrians to
use approximately designated stream crossings (i.e,, four pedestrian bridges), visitors will be
exposed to educational information about the watershed and natural resources as they make their
way along nearly five miles of mufti -use trails. The project, through design and operations, will
save significant water resources and will improve water quality by removing non-native vegetation
and improving stream flow in Lang Creek (a tributary to Conejo Creek in the Calleguas Creek
Watershed).
Thank you for considering this letter and for all your efforts to preserve and protect natural lands
and rivers in and around our area.
Sincerely,
r
Claudia Bill -de laeiia
Mayor
c: Conejo Recreation & Park District
