Conejo Recreation & Park District
GENERAL MANAGER BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Jim Friedl George M. Lange, Chair
Susan L. Holt, Vice Chair
Joe Gibson, Director
Ed Jones, Director
Chuck Huffer, Director
GENERAL MANAGER EMERITUS
Tex Ward
DATE: March 28, 2017
TO: Board of Directors
FROM: Jim Fried
SUBJECT: Conside a Southern California Gas Company Advanced Metering
Device at Oakbrook Regional Park/Chumash Interpretive Center
RECOMMENDATION
Authorize the General Manager to execute a Grant of Easement for construction and
maintenance of a Southern California Gas Advanced Metering Device at Oakbrook Regional
Park/Chumash Interpretive Center
DISCUSSION
In April of 2010, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), authorized So Cal Gas
Company to upgrade approximately six million of their existing natural gas meters with a
communication device by 2017. Installation of the new equipment eliminates the need for meter
reading as it transmits gas usage information electronically. A `dashboard' of the information
obtainable via the So Cal Gas website enables customers to better manage energy use and
utility costs.
The Advanced Metering device is solar powered and mounted on a 39' AGL (above -ground -
level) wood pole. The meter turns on and transmits data four times per day to a Data Collector
Unit. It does not communicate with other meters or appliances and will not interfere with any
wireless facility that may be contemplated for the site in the future.
The Southern California Gas Company previously attempted to construct this device north of
Lang Ranch Neighborhood Park, however, due to concerns from neighboring residents, the City
of Thousand Oaks Planning Department recommended the Chumash Interpretive Center
property as an alternate location for the project.
ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES
403 West Hillcrest Drive • Thousand Oaks, CA 91360-4223
(805) 495-6471 - FAX: (805) 497-3199 • Email: parks@crpd.org - Website: www.crpd.org
