Qiwgo
GENERAL MANAGER BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Jim Friedl Joe Gibson, Chair
Ed Jones, Vice Chair
George Lange, Director
Susan L. Holt, Director
Chuck Huffer, Director
DATE: March 6, 2014
TO: Board of Directors
FROM: Park Naming Committee (Vice -Chair Jones
SUBJECT: Renaming Lang Ranch Community Park
RECOMMENDATION
GENERAL MANAGER EMERITUS
Tex Ward
Director Huffer) /M cvj,,
Consider and discuss changing name of Lang Ranch Community Park to Sapwi Trails
Community Park.
DISCUSSION
After the February 6, 2014, Board of Directors meeting', the Park Naming Committee met to
discuss additional potential names for the Lang Ranch Community Park.
The concept for this park, with minimal improvements and an emphasis on trails, was
approved by the Board of Directors in April 2012. The committee feels it is important that this
park have a name which is memorable, reflects the historical significance of the park area,
includes the significant recreational amenity (trails), and captures the uniqueness of this
property.
After some discussion and research, we would like to suggest the following name for your
consideration: Sapwi 'Trails Community Park.
Sapwi is the name of a Chumash village once located in the general vicinity of this park
property .2 Besides a Chumash Village place name, in the Chumash language, "Sapwi" can
be interpreted to mean "House of the Deer." We believe including a documented local
Chumash Village place name as part of the park's name revives a historically documented
name and honors the historical significance of the first people known to inhabit what we call
Conejo Valley.
' Memo from February 6, 2014 CRPD Board meeting is attached for reference.
Y King, Chester, "The Names and Locations of Historic Chumash Villages" Journal of California Anthropology (1975) p.
171-179 ; http://escliolarsliii).ora/uc/item/8833s5k5
403 West Hillcrest Drive I Thousand Oaks, CA 91360-4223
(805) 495-6471 FAX: (805) 497-3199 Email: parks@crpd.org
