C@n(%@ McTwRbn a Ift1rh IMUOORToQ
GENERAL MANAGER
Jim Friedl
DATE: January 23, 2014
TO: Board of Directors
FROM: Jim Friedl, General Managl
SUBJECT: Community Dog Meeting
RECOMMENDATION
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Joe Gibson, Chair
Ed Jones, Vice Chair
George Lange, Director
Susan L. Holt, Director
Chuck Huffer, Director
GENERAL MANAGER EMERITUS
Tex Ward
Direct staff to continue with neighborhood input and outreach efforts related to potential off -
leash dog areas within various existing parks as outlined herein.
DISCUSSION
The Conejo Recreation and Park District owns and operates a single dog park on
approximately 3.5 acres of Conejo Creek West Park, which is also home to the Equestrian
Park and Las Flores Community Garden. This off -leash dog park, completed more than 10
years ago, is quite popular with dog owners. It is centrally located and larger than most local
dog parks so that it serves residents throughout the entire Conejo Valley.
Over the past few years, residents throughout the community have expressed an increasing
interest in enhancements to the existing dog park and the possibility of additional off -leash
areas in parks closer to their homes. In response, the District included a specific goal within
its most recently adopted Strategic Plan which provides that staff should seek input, ideas and
solutions from the public to examine the potential for additional off -leash dog areas and
discuss the potential for effective and sustainable improvements to the existing dog park. (See:
Strategic Plan Goal 2. 10.)
Accordingly, District staff recently conducted two community meetings.
Community Meeting #1 — Community Input
Held on September 30, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hillcrest Center, over 60 participants heard a
brief history of the purpose of the meeting, an overview and background of the proposed
process, and ground rules for their input.
403 West Hillcrest Drive I Thousand Oaks, CA 91360-4223
(805) 495-6471 FAX: (805) 497-3199 Email: parks@crpd.org
