SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS
Chumash Interpretative Center Annual Report — Gary McMillan
McMillan, Interim Board Chairman of Oak Park Chumash Interpretative Center
(OPCIC), stated his appreciation for the opportunity to address the CRPD Board,
distributed and highlighted the annual report, including long-term goals and the
education program; and introduced Robert Lopez, consulting archaeologist who
directs the children's program. Lopez explained that the educational program is for
third grade classes in the general area, the program runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Tuesday through Friday during the academic year, and last year approximately
5,000 kids were served.
In response to inquiries, McMillan said that summer programs are being
discussed, docent training is expected to begin later in the year, CRPD has been
very supportive, both sides of a 2 Y2 mile trail have been cleared for the safety of
children, an annual powwow will be reinstituted in 2007, and a series of artifacts
exhibits is a goal.
Board members suggested using local volunteer programs, such as the Conejo
Valley Historical Society, as resources for docents. Gibson praised the partnership
between OPCIC and CRPD and urged caution relative to wall murals.
