We have had better years.
Of course, the coronavirus and public health regulations impacted Conejo Recreation and mark
District in a variety of ways. Once the public health stay home orders began in March, all sorts of
things happened. People were instructed not to gather — thus nearly all recreation programs were
suspended or canceled; community and special events were nixed and community centers were
closed, along with various outdoor recreational amenities (e.g. basketball courts, tennis courts,
volleyball courts, sports fields, picnic areas, skateparks, bike parks and playgrounds). The parks
remained open, but permanent restrooms were closed, so porta-potties were brought in. Drinking
fountains were turned -off. The public was encouraged to get outdoors ("socially distanced" from
others) so parks remained open. COSCA trails were open until Los Angeles County, (National and
State Parks closed their trails - leaving COSCA no choice but to close its trails to prevent them
from being overwhelmed by our neighboring hikers.
Unfortunately, the suspension of gatherings and the closing of so many facilities meant many
recreation staff had no hours, landing nearly 150 CRPD part time employees on unemployment.
Where possible, CRPD staff did step up early and in a variety of ways. Parks have remained
open continuously. CRPD hosted a drive-through COVID-19 testing location at Conejo Creek
South. Community centers were opened for blood drives. Virtual community centers and zoom
classes were created. Drive -up and drive-through events replaced some of our traditional
gatherings. Senior Nutrition meals more than doubled to 120 per day. Paid staff helped distribute
food alongside Food Share and Safe Passages staff and volunteers. Thousands of signs were
poste® throughout the parks and trails informing the public about what was open, closed or had
special rules for use. Camper -to -staff ratios dropped to below 10:1 and extra cleaning safety
protocols were implemented.
ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES
403 West Hillcrest Drive I Thousand Oaks, CA 91360-4223
(805) 495-6471 1 FAX: (805) 497-3199 1 Email: parks@crpd.org I Website: www.crpd.org
