Conejo Recreation & Park District
GENERAL MANAGER BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Jim Friedl Susan L. Holt, Chair
Joe Gibson, Vice Chair
George M. Lange, Director
Ed Jones, Director
Chuck Huffer, Director
GENERAL MANAGER EMERITUS
Tex Ward
DATE: November 15, 2018
TO: Board of Directors
FROM: Jim Friedl, General Manag
SUBJECT: Very Large Community ve t Conejo Creek North and Conejo Creek
South Parks
RECOMMENDATION
Approve up to three very large events at Conejo Creek North and Conejo Creek South Park (Chili
Cook -off at Conejo Creek North and Conejo Valley Days and Oakheart Country Music Festival at
Conejo Creek South).
BACKGROUND
Conejo Creek North Park is designed to be a community gathering space with 3 shaded picnic
areas designed for groups of 400, 200 and 75, plus an expansive lawn area as well as active and
passive recreational space. The Grant R. Brimhall Thousand Oaks Library, Goebel Adult
Community Center and Alex Fiore Thousand Oaks Teen Center area all located and operate on
the north side of Janss Road.
Conejo Creek South Park is a facility for field sports such as soccer and baseball.
Although not intended to be a "County Fair Grounds", on occasion, these facilities have also
served as a location for very large community events such as Conejo Valley Days & Chili Cook -
off as well as Persian New Year and most recently the OakHeart Country Music Festival. The
Thousand Oaks Chili Cook -off had been held on Conejo Creek South for many years until the
District moved that event to Conejo Creek North in order to minimize the impacts to the sports turf
at Conejo Creek South.
These existing very large community events typically take place within a 90 -day time period during
Spring and early Summer because the rest of the year includes heavily scheduled sports use and
unreliable weather in Winter and early Spring. In order for these events to occur, CRPD Board of
Directors must consider and approve a special agreement with the event promoter including
special conditions for the event.
ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES
403 West Hillcrest Drive • Thousand Oaks, CA 91360-4223
(805) 495-6471 • FAX: (805) 497-3199 - Email: parks@crpd.org • Website: www.crpd.org
