The south building was renovated to meet the lease requirements, adding 2,000 square feet and restoring the building to its historic exterior. The National Park Service is the current tenant. Over the past five years, there has been periodic interest by outside parties in leasing or buying the north building. Due to historical' status, density and other issues, these proposals were not feasible. Historical Janss House The historical Janss House was built in 1931 and is located at 482 Green Meadow Drive. The 5,753 square foot house was built for Peter Janss as a weekend retreat. In 1943 it became the principal home of Janss' younger son, Edwin Janss. Peter Janss immigrated from Denmark to Chicago in 1870 where he became a physician and then moved from Chicago to Los Angeles in 1893. In Los Angeles, Peter Janss became a land developer and was joined in business by his sons, Harold and Edwin. The Janss Corporation planned and developed properties in Monterey Park, the San Fernando Valley, the Conejo Valley and Westwood Village, donating the land on which UCLA is built. The Janss home was designated a local County of Ventura Landmark No. 112 in 1987 by a resolution of the Ventura County Cultural Heritage Board. Subsequently, in January, 1997, City Council transferred responsibility of identifying City historical landmarks to the Thousand Oaks Cultural Heritage Board. The historical Janss House is a facility owned by the City. The house was made available for public use through a lease arrangement with the Arts Council, and is operated through a coalition agreement between the Arts Council of the Conejo Valley (ACCV), the City of Thousand Oaks, and the Conejo Recreation and Park District. The agreement directs the Conejo Recreation and Park District to staff the facility, organize and conduct programs, provide for the calendar of events, pay telephone costs, and work with the Arts Council board members in relation to center operations and financial records associated with joint programs. The Arts Council is responsible for providing liability insurance, security, light maintenance of the facility's interior, maintaining official records for receipts and expenditures associated with programs sponsored by the Arts Council, and appointing individuals to work with center personnel regarding operations. The City of Thousand Oaks is responsible for utilities, maintenance of the interior and exterior of the facility, and major repairs to the facility. A City staff person is assigned to work with CRPD and ACCV personnel in relationship to center operations.
