Gillette, Mayor, City of Thousand Oaks Michael Berger, Chair, Conejo Recreation and Park District Board DATE: July 11, 2000 SUBJECT: Community Use of Remaining Available Area in Local Historical Civic Center Building and Private Use of Historical Janss House ISSUE: What is the best community use for the north building of the local historical Civic Center Building at 401 Hillcrest Drive and what action should the respective Boards consider regarding the historical Janss House on the Los Robles Golf Course? RECOMMENDATIONS: Direct General Manager of Conejo Recreation and Park District and City Manager to prepare a community use plan (to include the offices of the Conejo Recreation and Park District, transition of Arts Council activities and offices, community rehearsal space, possible adult school classes and other related uses), covering both financial and rehabilitation programs for full utilization of the historical north building of the former Civic Center at 401 Hillcrest Drive; and direct staff to prepare plan for private use of Janss House. Historical 401 Hillcrest The Civic Center at 401 Hillcrest Drive was built in 1970 on land donated to the City by the Janss Corporation in the late 60's. Additional acreage was purchased adjacent to the Civic Center in the early 1970's for possible use as a police station or other community use. An existing land covenant for the property expired in 1989, which lifted any restrictions on use of the property. In 1986, City Council gave direction to look at expanding the Civic Center with a middle building or by building two stories on the existing facility.
