Conejo Recreation & Park District
GENERAL MANAGER
Jim Friedl
DATE: March 15, 2018
TO: Board of Directors
FROM: Jim Friedl, General Manag
SUBJECT: Urban Greening Grant Pro m
RECOMMENDATION
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Susan L. Holt, Chair
Joe Gibson, Vice Chair
George M. Lange, Director
Ed Jones, Director
Chuck Huffer, Director
GENERAL MANAGER EMERITUS
Tex Ward
Adopt Resolution 031518-A, authorizing the District to apply for grant funding through the Urban
Greening Grant Program, with funding to be used towards the development of Conejo Creek
Southwest and, in a separate application, urban greening improvements, at multiple park locations
in Zones I, III, and IV.
DISCUSSION
The California Natural Resources Agency's Urban Greening Program was created to support the
development of green infrastructure projects that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and
provide other health and economic benefits. Under AB 109 (Chapter 249, Statutes of 2017),
$24.7 million is allocated for this program to support urban greening projects in effort to meet a
target of GHG emissions reductions of 40% below 1990 levels by 2030.
The passive development of Conejo Creek Southwest directly aligns with Urban Greening
Program objectives, by expanding community parks, planting trees to sequester and store carbon,
and provide permeable multi -use walkways. The project will connect neighboring residents to the
park and, by promoting biking, walking and jogging, reduce vehicle miles traveled. As a separate
application, staff is recommending similar urban greening improvements at multiple park locations
in Zones I, III, and IV. The District is seeking a total grant award of $3.7 million. The application
deadline is April 11th, 2018, with award notification in October or November.
ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES
403 West Hillcrest Drive - Thousand Oaks, CA 91360-4223
(805) 495-6471 - FAX: (805) 497-3199 • Email: parks@crpd.org • Website: www.crpd.org
