Thousand Oaks — For the Time of Your Life
Proposal to the City of Thousand Oaks to Apply for Age-Friendly/Livable Community
Designation Through AARP/World Health Organization
Presented by the Thousand Oaks Council on Aging
The purpose of this report is to recommend to the Thousand Oaks City Council that it take
immediate steps to begin working toward the designation of an "Age Friendly/Livable
Community,' with inclusion on the City's 2018-2019 Priority List.
According to the World Health Organization, "An age -friendly world enables people of all
ages to actively participate in community activities and treats everyone with respect,
regardless of their age. It is a place that makes it easy for older people to stay connected
to people that are important to them. And it helps people stay healthy and active even at
the oldest ages and provides appropriate support to those who can no longer look after
themselves' (http://www.who.intfagging/age-Mendly-world/enf),
In preparing for the future of the City, the Thousand Oaks Council on Aging proposes
that the City apply for a designation as an "Age-f=riendly/Livable Community"
through AARP, an affiliate of the World Health Organization. Becoming an "age -
friendly" city requires that the City, as well as all public and private stakeholders,
collaborate to develop an action plan addressing the eight domains of livability. The
plan will serve as a guide for future practices in doing business and serving Thousand
Oaks citizens for residents at all stages of life.
The pian will encourage coordination of major stakeholders to review the City's
2017-2018 Proposed Priorities through a lens of livability for all ages. Example:
How can we provide a permanent training home for the Los Angeles Rams while attending
to some of the eight domains of livability listed below? Will the facilities be well -lit at night
with security cameras, include sidewalks wide enough for wheelchairs, provide sufficient,
accessible parking, and recruit local diverse administrative staff of all ages, etc.
The World Health Organization defines livability" in terms of eight domains, many of
which the City is already addressing.
1. Outdoor Spaces
2. Transportation
3. Housing
4. Social Participation
5. Respect and Social Inclusion
6. Civic Participation and Information
7. Communication and Information
8. Community and Health Services
3
